If you already have an installed gnome-libs the compile works perfectly.  If 
you don't it breaks.  If you don't do a "make maintainer-clean" it might also 
work; quite a few generated files are in CVS.  :-(  (Although someone may have 
fixed this by now; my tests are on a snapshot from Friday afternoon.)
