libintl woes

On my system, building without included libintl causes an undefined
reference dcgettext__ and building with included libintl works ok
but builds a static library and links outside the gnome-libs directory
fail.

Any ideas? libgnomeui hardcodes the target to be .la, is that ok
for libintl also, as that would seem to do the trick. Any other ways?
