Failed dependencies

Hi,
Went to ftp.gnome.org and downloaded the latest rpm's of RedHat5.1. I have
read through the last 3 months of Gnome archive and tried all options, I
still get fail dependencies on many files. What am I doing wrong. I tried
rpm -ivh, I tied it with -Uvh, -U, -i and I tried all of these with and
without --force. I got a couple to go but only with --force. (newbie)
