I got that error when I didn't have the version 1.o gtk+ libs on the path.
My solution was to install gtk+ 1.0.3 in /Software/gtk+-1.0.3, and add a
little script to my path:
#!/bin/sh
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/Software/gtk+-1.0.3/lib
/Software/gimp/bin/gimp
Something like that should work for you.
