how to debug applets?

I want to try to debug the gnome-pager applet, but I can't start it
from the command-line, so I don't know how to get gdb to chew on it...

Any help appreciated

PS. The problem with gnome-pager is that sometimes it just decides to
dissapear when a window pops up.
