Problems logging into cvs

When ever I try to log into cvs I get the following:
[kbirch@mrburns /stor]$ export
CVSROOT=':pserver:anonymous@cvs.gnome.org:/debian/home/gnomecvs'
[kbirch@mrburns /stor]$ cvs login
(Logging in to anonymous@cvs.gnome.org)
CVS password:
cvs [login aborted]: unrecognized auth response from cvs.gnome.org:
[kbirch@mrburns /stor]$
Anyone have any idea why this is happening?
I am running RH5.0 with CVS 1.9.
