Yes, It's pretty interesting.  I'm trying to formulate my idea of this. 
It's
pretty fascinating, but I see a few problems:

[disclaimer: I work for a living, so if any of this has been discussed
and I've
missed it, forgive and enlighten me :) ]

1) I don't think that any of this should be forced on the developer... I
don't
   think we want a 'heartbeat' function that the programmer would have
to call
   at intervals to indicate status.  This should be internal to the
windowing
   system at some level.  Of course, there should be points at which the
developer
   should be able to say "I'm doing this..." and whatnot.  I've seen
some of the
   posts concerning using /proc....  I kind of like this idea as an
alternative
   to heartbeats...  but I understand the concern about
cross-UNIX/platform
   compatability.

2) I think that some of the color blind issues are good points, but I
think that
   if we allow the user to determine the kind of colors/coding scheme (I
liked
   the RBBBRBBBBR kind of coding I saw way back) that this would allow
color
   blind people to come up with a scheme that was acceptable to them.

3) this should be a very *mimimal* process.  I want this to eat up the
minimal
   amount of processor on my puny 166mhz pentium.  (Or my 68030 when I
get
   UNIX installed on it... :)

4) I forget what else.  I'm going for another beer.  :)
