I didn't see an answer to this.
The answer is that the user will put this at the end of his .xinitrc
(aka .xession):
exec gnome-session
Presumably the default xsession code will be modified to do this by
Gnome-oid system builders (Red Hat, Debian).
gnome-session will handle starting all your applications and saving
their state when you log out. This mostly works right now, with the
big holdout being window managers.
