HELP !!! Trouble with gnome-libs configure

I was having trouble with an error "Bad Match" with the panel and when I
asked for help was pointed to an FAQ which stated the problem was that I
needed a newer imlib.  I downloaded the newest imlib and compiled this.
Then, I got back to knome-libs and there were unresolved referenced to 
the png and tiff routines from gdk_imlib.  So, I checked the configure
again
for imlib and it did not find these libs despite being properly
installed (png and
tiff).  I have the right versions per the imlib web page yet still no
joy.
So, I tried to add '-lpng -ltiff' to the Makefile and try again.  No
joy; gnome-libs
now says that it cannot find gdk_imlib so quits configuring.

HELP!!!!  Why won't imlib find the png and tiff libs and why won't
gnome-libs
find gdk_imlib?????????
