configure fails

G'day All,
I keep getting this wierd error with nearly every module I compile. I can
do a quick work around with vi but I think I should really do that.

It happens when I run configure.
checking for objdir... .libs
creating libtool
checking for pthread_create in -lpthread... yes
./configure: line 1719: syntax error near unexpected token `AM_PATH_GTK(0.99.5,,{'
./configure: line 1719: ` AM_PATH_GTK(0.99.5,,{ echo "configure: error: GTK not installed" 1>&2; exit 1; })'
make: *** [config.status] Error 2

This is for gnome-libs, but it happens with a lot of them. What's going wrong?
