sorry, perhaps i didn't make myself clear. gtk 0.99.7 is the version
installed on my workstation and the problem remains as stated previously.
it seems to me that the libraries are installed in /usr/local/lib
i think this should be the default dir that gnome looks in.
hopefully, the error message that i get when configure'ing with gnome
0.13 (gtk 0.99.1 not detected) can be chalked up to someone not modyfing
the "0.99.1" string to a later version.. or is something wrong with the
distro of gnome that i got?
