Hmm: there might be a conflict with some old gtk libraries that are
sitting in /usr/lib, and autogen/configure might have guessed /usr/bin 
because of one of those libraries.

Make sure that LIBRARY_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH point to
/usr/local/lib first, and that PATH points to /usr/local/bin first.
