Anyone who writes a poker game should take a serious look at John
Salmon's netpoker

It is based on a cool network poker-playing protocol, and it is really 
cool.  It has robots, and allows many people to play together.

He has a telnet version, a cursees version and a java version at least
(I haven't checked lately), and people can play with netscape for
example.
