I note that most of the Gnome programs don't seem to define the
WM_CLASS property.  This makes it inconvenient, to say the least, to
give the program a user specified icon in the window manager.  gtt is
a particular offender here, but I imagine there are others; even Gimp
was guilty until recently.

I've never met a program from any other toolkit that didn't define
these.  Could this be perhaps worked on?  If nothing else, you could
define the WM_CLASS from argv[0].
