Gnome and X

What is the relationship between Gnome and X? Gnome seeks to build a
"desktop", but will this desktop rely on a certain level of X
compatibility or is it separate from X? I guess I just don't understand
what runs on top of what and how all the pieces talk to each other. Is
this right (for RedHat Linux):
Linux Kernel <-> XFree86 <-> Gnome <-> Enlightenment <-> Netscape
Is the above "general layout" correct?
Please let me know where I am going astray...
