   then something is wrong because i just tested it without any results ...

Possible reasons:

1) pt_PT locale is not installed properly.  (Check the
   /usr/share/locale/pt_PT/LC_* files (or any pt_PT directory).)

2) The compiled Portuguese message file,
`$(datadir)/locale/pt/LC_MESSAGES/gnome.mo' is not installed
properly.  Is there pt.mo or pt.gmo in the po directory?
