imlib seems to be a bit of a moving target: the spelling of the
.tar.gz file changes, as does the directory into which it unpacks
(which does not have the name-version format).
With libraries this is a real problem because you end up with funky
libraries floating around and not removed.
automake would help normalize a lot of this: its "make uninstall" and
"make dist" are great for that.
