I'll (finally) bite: people are always talking about using LDAP for
these kinds of things.

Why?

In every Unix shop I've been in, your home directory is mounted
everywhere using NFS.  In this situation, LDAP is superfluous.  You
might as well just use the filesystem -- you get the same benefits (as
I understand them -- enlighten me), with the added bonus that the
developer can just use the same old Unix stuff without relying on yet
another daemon.
