Well, we could wrap this in a simple routine.  Then we will be able to
move it to whatever we need in the future.

Tom has designed a nice API and notification system that would provide
this (together with a server for managing this).  I suggest we
implement Tom's gnome-config for the next GNOME release.

I do not think we will have time to do it before.
