Gettext - no gettext.m4

I was under the impression that gtk+ didn't necessarily need
gettext. I do not succeed in compiling without it. So I
downloaded gettext 0.10.xx and compiled and installed. It
didn't create the gettext.m4. The autogen.sh for gtk+ call
gettextize with "--copy" which is not supported accordingly
to gettextize itself. Do I need a newer version of gettext
and where do I get it or is it something else I'm doing
wrong here?

I really hate asking this kind of questions...
