Can't seem to get past gnome-libs-0.26 when compiling!

I have tried it ans re-tried it.  I can't seem to get past the configure
script in  gnome-libs.  It errors with this:

checking for gdk_imlib_init in -lgdk_imlib... no

I have compiled imlib with no problem.  In fact I am using imlib-1.7 .
Is there a parameter to force it??  I am using the the tarballs because
I cant get past the following errors using the CVS version.

Could someone give me a tip as to where I am going wrong??  This is no
longer a nice program to have, it is a quest to get it running.
