Yeah, and don't *ever* port something without the original author's
permission (unless the author hasn't been heard from in ages or has
otherwise dropped off the net). Splitting a project is majorly rude, and
will make you a whole *bunch* of enemies.
That said, if you ask permission and provide a plausible way to avoid a
fork, many authors will approve. Alternatively, if the changes are really
small and don't mess up a program, people generally won't mind.
Remember, 'tis better to add standard session management to a non-Gnome app
than it is to start a monster flame war.
