I think we might be speaking of two different things..

The keypad problem with vim is fixed in stable with this commit :

2002-02-16  Kjartan Maraas  <kmaraas gnome org>

* vt.c (vt_reset): Use strlen() not sizeof() to find length of a string.
Thanks to the debian guys.
        
And this fix has not been backported to HEAD..
