X workarea height

Hi folks,

I'm trying to retrieve the size of workarea from either GNOME or KDE
environments. By workarea, I mean

a) Xdesktop height - gnomepanel height (Gnome)
b) Xdesktop height - kpanel height (KDE)


any ideas?
