I've run into that in .po files, too. I'll try to follow it up from  
now on.

It's good that they're willing to address it, and XML is set up to be  
manipulable. I hope you get some useful answers. It might be worth  
posting this to the Translation Project list: there's a lot of  
gettext experience there.
