Are you *writing* a text editor or *using* a text editor?
Either way, the keyboard switching stuff doesn't belong at
the application level. There are panel applets that do what
you want. gkb comes with gnome, and gswitchit is the next
generation version, especially preferable if you have
xfree86 4.3.0.
