Are you asking what the difference between an application and a
library is? An application can be run, it is a program; a library is
just a set of routines which an application can use.
Else if you're asking about the coreness: The definition in our status
tables is that core modules are the ones included in the Gnome
platform release (or whatever the full name is supposed to be :-).
However, if you're merely asking which modules are most important, I'd
say the most visible ones. This includes
- some parts of Gtk+
- libgnomeui
- gnome-panel
- gnome-control-center
- gdm2
The rest depends very much on what applications you use most. Galeon,
as the browser, is probably quite important too. As is Nautilus, I
think.
