I've now had time to look at the gnome-libs-1-0 branch, and the
functionality of my patch is not included.

What I have not had time to do updating my patch so that it uses the
newly developed autoconf macro provided at
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/unicode.html#activate . If there is any
interest in accepting patches, that should be done first.
