These days it's a waste of energy to edit .desktop files at all; try to
make sure the package will use xml-i18n-tools resp. intltool (?). Then
.desktop entries will end up in the PO files and you can translate them
as "normal" messages.
File a bug report, if the package doesn't use xml-i18n-tools/intltool.
