xml-i18n-tools and .desktop files

xml-i18n-tools is a nice package.  I'm wondering whether .desktop files
are supported, too?  grepping trough the scripts seems to indicate it.
The README doesn't talk about it.  NEWS seems not to be up-to-date...

In addition please cleanup the NEWS files.  At the moment it's somehow
misused like a regular README file ;)
