On the panel, add the applet 'character picker' (in utilities.)
Clicking one of the letters puts that letter in the clipboard. You can
change what letters are displayed by hovering the mouse over it and
hitting the letter closest to what you want ('e' for 'é','ê',etc.)
(If you are using click-to-focus, you may have to click the panel or the applet first, I don't know.)
