Minutes for last two release team meetings (late, sorry!)

Wow. That was impressively bad. Not only did I fail to send out
last-but-one minutes at all, and am sending the current ones out 
later than I try to; I also nearly sent the version with 
"Proto-minutes" all over the title and "FIXME: did I understand 
that bit right?" comments in them.

Perhaps I should have done, and everyone could tell me "no".

See attachments: seems saner than two separate emails.

And I know the stuff about clocks seems pointless, but the
aim is to remind release team, since we have never yet got
this right.

I have started bracketing the old comments on action items. It
was getting confusing. This is more confusing to read now, but
I hope it's easier to follow the progress.

Actions:

  DONE: Luis to investigate a possible site for a possible donated
  box from Sun.
  => Investigated. Not overly hopeful on this.

  PENDING: Jeff to install analog or webalyser on the box hosting dotplan
  so we know what people are looking for/at/over.
  => gnome-sysadmin is snowed under. Jeff will do it.

  PENDING: Jeff to create check-list of "things to do before major
  release" and maintain it so it's ready for 2.2.0.
  => Jeff to post his list to the release-team list and then we can
  whack it into CVS or somewhere where everyone can see it. 

  PENDING: Mikael to prioritise API docs needed
  => Not here

  DROPPED: Jeff to write 'GNOME 2.2 Desktop Modules' GEP and post, etc.
  (=> This action has morphed. The one GEP has become three: one about
  the developer platform of GNOME; one which is a list of modules for
  the desktop generally which will be a base for future GEPs to work
  from; and one which will be the desktop platform module list specifically
  for 2.2 (when 2.4 comes along, that will have its own). He has started
  writing this (these).)
  (=> Partly written. Not sent out)
  (=> This has turned into a massive amount of work for what is basically
  "a list". Unless people at large think we need to do it all in GEP form,
  we are inclined to drop this item.)

Decisions and discussion:

  * 2.1 status

  There are not masses and masses of exciting new big features.
  We got most of those into 2.0 :) There are lots of little 
  improvements which should overall make it feel much nicer,
  rather like the 1.4.0 -> 1.4.1 move did. 

  * Bug status

  Luis has spent the week drowning in his bug mail and sent a 
  summary: 2.1 seems really stable so far (woo!); and for 2.0.3
  he thinks there are no supremely nasty bugs lurking, unless the
  maintainers know of any which aren't in bugzilla. The crasher bugs 
  (eg http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=95088 ) seem to be
  distro-dependent and thus probably packaging bugs.
  
  * API doc status                                                              

  Mikael is away this week. The obvious fact is that we don't have
  nearly enough people writing API docs, which is why we're having
  to prioritise and hope that someone will pop up and write the
  most urgent ones. We really really need good API docs. They help
  people coming into GNOME to get started faster. They help everyone
  else keep going faster too. Please help :) (A personal comment:
  it wasn't API documentation, but I did discover that documenting
  something -- anything -- really helps you understand how it works.
  Except gmenu. So don't think you have to know it inside out when
  you start. You will by the end :)) 

  * Website

  Still on the quest of making dotplan (and d.g.o) more relevant and 
  easier to navigate and find things. The best thing everyone can do on
  this is to file bugs against product: website: component: d.g.o.
  Then these can (a) be fixed now; and (b) incorporated into
  new site from scratch.

  is fixed in stable branch as well as in unstable.

  NEW: Jeff to summarise the expected feature lists for 2.2 we
  have so far in RSN (Not the best name for it, "Real Soon Now" is
  our "what's going on; you are here" email to desktop-devel-list). 

  NEW: Glynn to mail people about UI review.

Decisions and discussion:

  * 2.0.3 status:

  We are going to release a 2.0.3 at the start of November. 
  We need to tell maintainers, bug-fixers and translators in
  good time for this. Jeff will announce this. 

  * 2.1 status

  2.1.1 is coming out "this morning" in Jeff-time (post-meeting, 
  probably before these minutes appear!) Few changes and additions 
  from 2.1.0: totem is included in 2.1.1 which is a new package. 
  Jorn has suggested some proxy code to get into 2.1 which looks 
  a much-needed addition, if it can get in before we freeze. 

  Iain has been porting gnome-media stuff to gstreamer, but 
  currently it requires CVS gstreamer which is not ideal for a
  desktop release. Consequently, we are not going to put gstreamer
  in the release. However, it will probably go into Fifth Toe,
  which is being put together by Bastien Nocera (hadess) and 
  Will Lashell (terral). The only reason for not going in there
  would be if we made a separate release of it, an idea which was
  discussed. 

  We need to get the list of "what will be in the desktop in 2.1->2.2"
  sent around people and mailing lists. (We got rid of the action item 
  about the GEP in favour of just having a list, so the list should 
  definitely be out there.)

  Before the feature freeze hits, we (release-team) need to tell
  usability, i18n, docs, and QA people exactly which apps they
  are going to be dealing with. 
  
  * Review of feature list emails for publishing on the website and d-d-l.
 
  Jeff has all our responses from module maintainers about what's
  going into 2.1 packages and expected to be here for 2.2.0. He will
  include them in his updates on desktop-devel-list.

  * Bug status

  bugsquad has helped Luis catch up since he's been away, but
  there is more to do. irc.gnome.org's #bugs and the 
  bugsquad gnome org mailing list can always do with new members.

  * Build sheriff needed

  Jacob will be standing down as build sheriff. The build sheriff's
  job is to make sure that CVS HEAD is generally build-able and that
  snapshots can thus be automatically generated. It's not a fun job,
  but it is a very helpful one. Luis will post to gnome-hackers about
  this. 

  * Release-team list membership

  Jacob pointed out the release-team gnome org address is nowhere
  obvious on http://developer.gnome.org/dotplan/ . It should be now,
  and here it is again: mailto:release-team gnome org  This is a
  a private mailing list which contains the eight people on the
  phone call. We shall add Will and Bastien to it, too, since they're
  doing Fifth Toe. Anything you think we should know, tell us. Feel
  free to cc wildly so other lists see it.
