Hi Bill,
If Sun have been using these patches for a while why don't you merge
them? Considering that VTE is without a maintainer I doubt that anyone
would object to a experienced and well known core developer such as you
merging these patches, especially since Sun using them means that have
gotten wide testing. 

While we don't want maintainer less modules to become wild west bonanza
in regards to people committing we shouldn't let the lack of a
maintainer stop experienced and well established developers from doing
responsible choices. Don't think apathy is preferable over 0.01% less
toes getting stepped on.
