I see your point; however, if the problem is that users might get
confused that it's a folder and not the desktop, it might be clearer to
just use a different icon. OS X, Windows and KDE also use a special
icon and it seems to work well for users over there.
BTW, is the emblem appearing in the emblem manipulation GUI? That could
be confusing...
