ctrl-v in mozilla and then ctrl-p in gedit works for me.

It even works from the terminal (shift-ctrl-v) to evolution:
[murrayc localhost murrayc]$ gedit --version
Gnome gedit 1.199.0

I only have problems with old KDE/QT apps and emacs.
