Sometime try the following experiment:

change your UID/GID of your home directory.

Log out.

See how long it takes you to get your machine straightenend out
again.  See how many places you have to go fix you weren't expecting
to...

I complained bitterly about this a year or two ago, but find
it is an even bigger disaster to do this now than then.
