No, he *DIDN'T*.
I didn't revert 1.6 because I feared of touching this sensible code
again which could have caused further irritations. That's definitly the
maintainers job if I got the maintaining policies right (no, his job is
definitly not only reverting code by uninformed people).
1.7 and 1.8 were small fixes to the layout I broke with 1.6.
I broke it so I thought I ought to fix it.
