I wouldn't say that.  Photoshop makes a lot of use of statusbar progress
indicators while applying filters, saving large files etc.  So does MS
Office.  Personally I find them kind of reassuring without being
intrusive, and their optionality is nice (because you should always be
able to turn off the status bar).  I'd like to see more of them in GNOME
:)
