The UI Hit Squad's impression of a new file dialogue is probably the
best I've seen so far, but I still think the standard common dialogue
in Windows 95 is still the easiest to use I've seen so far, except that
I would change the "Look in" label at the top to "Folder:" or "Select
Folder:" or something more obvious.
I also agree with getting rid of that evil horizontal scrolling view
in any new Gnome common dialogue. It is also essential, in my view,
that any new dialogue be re-sizable. Nothing is more annoying than
having to browse through a directory full of "long filenames from hell"
when you are restricted to a pathetic little listbox! It would also be
nice to be able to filter the listbox by "*gz" or something like that.
And as for any "Cancel" button reversing any file operations performed
whilst the dialogue is open, I've never heard of anything more stupid
in my life! Sometimes it is very convenient to bring up a file-dialogue
to create a directory, and then press cancel without actually doing
anything further. If I pressed cancel and it deleted my directory, I
would be a very pissed-off user!
As much as Microsoft are evil, they've definately got the file-dialogues
sorted out (though, the ones in Office 2000 are an abomination). It all
biols down to the fact that if a common-dialogue isn't done right then
people are gonna get annoyed, and will probably say "Man, this Gnome
still has some catching up to do" as I often hear when people hear that
I'm using it.
In summary: No horizontal scroll view by default
Resizable common-dialogue window
Filter box somewhere
No undoing everything by pressing cancel
