How do I change the background color on gtk+ widgets?

  I need to change the background color on gtk+ labels.  How am I
supposed to do that?  How about in frames or text widgets?  I have trie=
d
to allocate a GdkColor and setting it to the bg[widget state here], but=
 the
label is still gray.

  Help is appreciated.
