I'm also thinking of trying to integrate new build system in one of
the (old) modules, to be used as an example (along with the write-up
of the like "How to switch to new documentation build system" :).
Doing it for something like gnome-hello seems like a great gnome-love
agenda item, and I'll be there to help with xml2po issues (and fix
them as soon as I can).
