Translating in Indian languages using gettext.

Hi
The other day, I was browsing around in the gettext manual. It says that
gettext has support for a number of Indian languages like
[1] Devnagri
[2] Gujarati
[3] Bihari
I have not checked for all, just bumped into these.
So I was wondering, how can gettext translate into these languages, when
Indian languages use a different 'script' and not the English alphabet?
