Okay, but the menu item should then be disabled ...

yes and no. I've used (tried) versions from 0.0.6.19980830 towards
0.1.6. 0.3.5 was the next one. I'm a debian developer who tries to
package 0.3.5 for Debian, too.

I myself, yes. But Debian support many architectures (10 I believe). I
haven't patched the above files but updated through executing
libtoolize (and afterwards distroying the symlinks to
/usr/share/libtool/...).
