Again, use HAL.  It is quite elegant, and Just Works(tm).  Plus, as its 
ported to new OSs or gets support for new devices, they will also just 
work.  'Bout as clean and simple as it gets.  You can resort to polling 
for "legacy" systems that don't have HAL.
