Would it help if the theme manager (where users select a theme) managed
a single directory at the front of the icon path, so that almost always
the correct icon would be found on the first attempt, and the code could
just use an open(), moving on only if it failed and the error was
"no such file or directory" (or platform specific equivalent)?
