I used apt-get to perform my upgrade off of Matt Hall's site:
http://people.ecsc.co.uk/~matt/

I suppose he may have set it prior to building the RPM.

I'm back down to 2.2 now...do you know if there's any way to use 2.4
with 2.2's panel manager?  Now that I know how to turn this feature off,
the lack of menu and floating panels are really my only reason not to
use 2.4.
