There is even libwmf compile-time option for sodipodi, but I have not
tested it for ages (not having neither much wmf, not any serious
need for these).

As ov generic vector drawing program (like every other program too)
- everybody has dreamed about things like hardware acceleration etc.
but actual problems are much-much more mundane. Writing clever
graphic code is interesting work - but 90% of time I have probably
spent with 2 meta-tasks:
a) Writing dynamic dialogs and similar UI stuff
b) Code to keep document in consistent state (SVG uses lot of
   referencing, plus there are things like undo/redo...)
