Well, instead of using gtk_main(), you could use
gtk_main_iteration_do(FALSE), to do only one iteration of the loop
at a time. Refer to:
http://developer.gnome.org/doc/API/gtk/gtk-general.html#GTK-MAIN-ITERATION-DO
for more info on the function.
