Well the problem appears to be where the binary is run, not where it is
built.  As the backtrace eludes to, it is crashing due to an entry in my
.gtkrc:

include "/usr/share/metathemes/ximian-south/gtk/Raleigh/gtk/gtkrc"

When I comment this line out, it works fine.  I guess this is indeed a
bug in gtk+.
