I've implemented a canvas item that displays card faces (and backs).  Its not
very polished but it works and comes with a blackjack game and a test
program.  It requires the latest version of gdk-pixbuf since there are
compositing bugs in earlier versions.  Feel free to grab it, test it out, and
tell me what you think.  You can get it from
